Discussion on racial advertising

Q For the next discussion assignment, find at least three examples of race in advertising. This can be print, billboards, social media television, etc. - think about the following - as well as other questions - how is race depicted in the ads? Do they overcome stereotypes or reinforce them? What are the meanings associated with the advertisements? The key is to think about how different forms of media can both reinforce and possibly challenge existing stereotypes and/or create new ones. Please describe the advertisements, what caused you to choose them, and whether you found them to challenge or confirm stereotypes. If possible, provide links for other students to view the advertisement. Please submit the original post by Friday, October 29 and comment on at least two other student's posts by Sunday, October 31.

The first example of racial stereotyping in ads that I have found depicts a child with a hoodie and it is an advertising of a clothing brand. “The Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” is written on the hoodie and the child is a black child. Many black people are stereotyped by media because of their looks because black people have different facial characteristics and the media has a tendency to compare them with monkeys. I found this advertisement really offensive as this is reinforcing the stereotypes of the Black people’s looks. Especially, it is even more disturbing that they are using a child to do it
